Making a breezy post here for a second to let Ben know that my final project is in the file on the servers. Vimeo wouldn't accept my final animation even though I tried to upload it three times and changed my export settings every time. Bleh. I haven't had very good luck with Vimeo, and if was going to be dodgy like most of my recent uploads with them, I'd rather not upload it at all.

SO, in short, I guess everyone will just have to live with being presently surprised at the screening tomorrow afternoon...

Send Pix is finished~!

THE ANIMATION IS FINISHED!!!

Of course, I have to add the end credits and render it out. But whatever. LOOK AT IT. Ahahahahaha. I've been working on this project NONSTOP since Sunday. Last night I was up until 4am scanning pictures for the end credits, and then I forgot to turn off my alarm and was woken up at 8am and decided to go ahead and finish the end credits. I'm living off of a steady diet of Ritz crackers, water, and whatever is in arm's reach. My new facebook profile pic pretty much explains how I'm feeling right now...

Send Pix Process 3

Okay. I'm really, really tired right now. Let's go through this quick:

The awesome: Body animating finished last night!

The lame: I had to render out three times. The first two were fudge-ups because for some reason it was only rendering the first two seconds. After I figured out how to make the render-out work, it would take an estimated seven God-forsaken hours to render. Okay, okay, so I've been a part of projects where scenes take days to render, so it's no big deal, but I was wondering if my poor machine could handle it (and I was very, very thankful that I didn't have to use school computers).

After the render I uploaded the scene into Flash so I could work on the facial animation. Flash is awesome in that no matter what size the file of a .mov file I upload is, it will always lag when I drag my timeline down to listen to the audio. The easy way to solve this is to just turn the video layer invisible, which is what I did.

This is basically what I see while I'm lip-syncing. Which isn't that bad. The thing that sucks is that Jack's jaw moves while he talks, and since Flash lags so much, I can't see if the jaw movements match the lip movements. It's not the end of the world, as long as it doesn't look absolutely horrible when I render it out. After I'm finish with the face animation, I'm going to bring it into After Effects and parent it to his face so it will follow it even through rotations and stuff. The thing that's hard about that is that when he rotates his head while having a specific place he's supposed to be looking (usually his cell phone) I have to guess where his eyes will make contact (like if his head is turned up but he's making eye contact with his phone, I can't tell in Flash whether or not he's really looking at his phone or a little too far to the left or right.)

Here's a picture of what he looks like with his face on his head in the right way. I'm doing the same thing with most of my facial animations where I keep both eyebrows on one layer, both eyes on one layer, the nose and upper lip on the same layer, and then the mouth has its own layer as well. For lip syncing I'm mostly putting in pre-made mouths during the important syllables and then going through and filling out the tweens myself between keyframes. The animation is at 24 frames per second, which is the highest frame count I've ever done for a project before. It's a challenge, but I'm enjoying the results.

Send Pix Process 2

I was able to get the voice actors in and record dialog last week. I've got about 20-30 seconds into the body animation of the main character. Here's a screenshot of the in-process rig of Zachary.

Not much else to report. Still plugging away trying to make Geoff's deadline...

Send Pix

I always like chronicling the stupid, meaningless adventures of life. I mean, you spend a lot of your life living, and not all of it is exciting, beautiful, or even has to tell a concrete story with morals. The two characters whose precious moments I will be telling is Jack Velasquez and Zachary Flynn.

Proposal

The object of the short is to capture a few seconds in the life of this carefree couple. Jack's character usually means well and tries his best to make his friends and family happy. Zachary, on the other hand, is usually rushed, hasty, and sarcastic, coming off as mean when he doesn't intend it.

The short will be done in one long take, starting on Jack. He has just turned on his new cell phone and wants to try and call Zachary to see if it works. He discovers that his phone can send pictures to people, so he takes a dorky picture of himself and tries to send it to Zachary. He starts shouting to Zachary, who's in the kitchen, and asks him questions that could be easily answered if they were in the same room. At the very end of the short, Zachary walks in and asks Jack what he wants him to see, and his cell phone beeps and tells him a new picture has arrived. He looks at the picture and rolls his eyes and smirks, leaving Jack a little annoyed.

With this project, I plan to:

1) Tell a very short story is a precise and comical way.
2) Create believable and well-animated characters.
3) Focus on creating a detailed background, since the short will only have one.

Assets

Character rigs:
Each character will need their own adjustable set of-
1) Face
2) Neck
3) Chest/Torso
4) Upper arms
5) Forearms
6) Palms
7) Fingers/Thumbs
8) Adjustable hair front/back

The basic character animation will be done in After Effects. The lip sync and eye details will be done in Flash.

Props:
1) Jack's cell phone
2) Jack's cell phone box
3) Zachary's cell phone

Background
Foreground (table top)

Schedule

The project is due on May 8th, so from this point on I have three weeks to complete it. So far the script is finished, and assets are coming together quickly. Here's a tentative schedule:

Week 1 (April 19th-25th)
+ Finish gathering assets
+ Record voices
+ Begin principle animation

Week 2
+ Continue principle animation
+ Begin lip sync and eye detail

Week 3
+ Finish lip sync and eye detail
+ Finish minor effects/gloss it up/make it pretty.

Since there aren't any camera moves, and a lot of the script is left to be ad libbed by my actors, I'm waiting for recording to be over before I spend precious time mapping out in storyboards. Here's an example of the basic layout (shot with a picture from my webcam... Sorry, my scanner's acting a little off right now.)

I normally use a limited color palette in my animations, but I want this one to be in color. The background will probably be limited to one color, probably dull so it will contrast with the lively colors of the characters. The characters will not have outlines, and gradients will be used for shadows. The characters will be rigged together using the puppet tool in After Effects, and some of the more fluid body movements will be used with the pushpin tool. I've never used After Effects for an animation project before, and I've also never even used the puppet tool, so this will be a learning experience for me. As the progress... progresses, I'll post what I have finished so far here.

Tracker Animation

It's 11:56. Still technically Wednesday night.

This one actually has sound, and it's kind of abrupt, so if your speakers are turned up loud, you've been warned.

Particle Animation

Cooking Mama from Kachi Riggs on Vimeo.

I drew the cloud and edited out the backgrounds to the Mamas in Photoshop. The rest was movie magic. I wish I could have found a better picture of the angry Mama. She looks so gross and pixel-y in the animation. And once again it looks like the video is stalling a little bit in Vimeo. I still don't know how to change that...

Twofer

Lucky you! You guys get two uploads instead of just one. Actually, if this were the proper place to explain how totally insane everything has been in the past two weeks, I totally would, but I'll just cut to the chase and post the shorties for AE 3D and word animations.

Girl Boxer from Kachi Riggs on Vimeo.

I really wanted to add sound to this one. If I did, it would go something like this:
Boxer: What? What? Yeah, check it! Can't touch this! Nuh-uh! Too fast, like lightning! Like a bullet, like-
*punch!*
Other Boxer: Oh-Ohhh... Oh my God, is she okay?

I liked how the other boxer was always a step or two behind. The illo for the girl was supposed to look like me. If I were boxing, I totally wouldn't forget a mouth guard! ten years of orthodontics teaches you to take good care of your pearlies.

カチ Animation from Kachi Riggs on Vimeo.

I don't really know what vimeo did to the video after it was uploaded. It cut off about half a second from the beginning to the end, and it's obviously laggy. The video on my comp turned out just fine, though. I don't really know how to fix this, or if this is a vimeo problem that's out of my hands...

Anyway, this was another project that I wanted to add a really creepy background track to. I don't really know why a lot of my projects come out looked kinda creepy. I don't really like scary stuff at all, honest. I told my roommate that the scariest movie I've ever seen was Shaun of the Dead, and she laughed at me. I always have to turn my eyes when David gets torn apart...

Mirror Trick

I'm reeeallllllyyyyy sleepy and I have to be at work early tomorrow morning, so there won't be a long explanation for this one.

Mirror Trick from Kachi Riggs on Vimeo.

I guess it's sort of a simple split screen. I tried doing a split earlier, but then I realized that when the physical side of me left the room, the color changed slightly. Not enough to really notice, but there was a jarring and obvious difference with the half with the mirror. So I had to roto around the mirror so the color change wouldn't be as obvious. The times are a little off in the acting, but it was as close as I could get without anybody helping me. All-in-all, this took about 15 minutes to crank out XD!

Diesel Power Animation!!

Here's the new assignment!

The image used is by Kippery.

KIPPERY

And the link to the original artwork can be found here.

Diesel Power Animation from Kachi Riggs on Vimeo.

A lot of steps went into making this particular piece. I had to go in and basically cut the image up, deleting the background entirely and giving each object its own layer. For the plane (since the pilot's head was in front of it) I had to draw that in, and I tried really hard to make it look like the original, but you can't even really tell because I put motion blur on it...

I had to make my own background that looked like worn paper like the original was drawn on, so that was done in photoshop as well. Everything was arranged and it all fell into place surprisingly well in After Effects. I was so happy with how it all turned out that I worked extra hard on adding a bunch of little features and details (which might be lost in the small encoding size).

Kippery's one of my most favorite DA artists. Her artwork is so cool XD! If y'all get a chance, y'all should check out her gallery! It's amazing!!!

Animals~!

Not really relevant to Ben's class, but here's a fun animation of some animals I did for Geoff's class that I spent the better part of my afternoon working on.

Scott Pilgrim Animation

Yay! Here it is!

Scott Pilgrim Animation from Kachi Riggs on Vimeo.
Okay. So. I was gonna upload the animations I did for last week's assignment, but I didn't realize it took Vimeo over two hours to upload a ten second clip. So here are some screenshots.

The coolest comic book in the world right now is Scott Pilgrim. I did a little animation of him based off of this picture.

I went into photoshop and deleted the background and stuff to make it an alpha layer. For the background in the video, I found picture online of comic book speedlines, made it a 'multiply' layer in photohsop, and added a gradient behind it to help it look a little like the original illustration. It ended up being kind of a hack job.

Using the Pupper Pin Tool in After Effects, I placed a series of joints on the picture where I wanted him to move. I was surprised that AE somehow configured it so the arm and hand went above the head. Anyway, the animation is of Scott doing this pointing motion and some headbanging. It would've looked a lot cooler if I had any sense of time at all and realized that ten seconds goes by really slowly, so the final animation looks a little weird.

So hopefully I'll have the animations up tomorrow, if not later tonight. I also did one using the bug samples from class, but I probably won't upload that one (not if it's going to take over two hours).

First Assignment!

Yay! New assignment time!

Here's what the final look is like...

I was listening to the Atari's song "Your Boyfriend Sucks" when I was trying to come up with something clever for the boy to write.

Anyway, I started out with a simple sketch. My scanner is ALL THE WAY in the other room, and I didn't feel like unplugging from the internet, so I just took a picture with my webcam on the top of my laptop. The initial sketch was drawn with him right-side-up, but for the sake of inking I wanted to make sure that the source picture would be upside-down the way it would be seen in the final picture. Sometimes if I draw characters one way with intentions of flipping them around, their proportions end up looking weird (something I need to work on) so in the meantime it's easier for me to just ink what I see.

I imported the picture into photoshop and drew over the pencil lines using my tablet. I'm still not too hot at drawing hands yet. I had to take a picture of my hand with my webcam as reference for this one...

After coloring in the blacks I used a separate layer to make the white for the skin. I made the background blue so I could make sure I wasn't coloring outside the lines. I added tattoos using premade brushes I found online. The overflow coming from the tattoos were hidden using mattes. I used two different designs for the arms and for the neck. The finger tattoos were used using a tattoo font I also found online. I had to rasterise the fonts and blur them out to make them look more like I drew them (since fonts are vectorized). After I was finished, I grouped all of the bits that made him up into a folder.

And then I forgot about taking pictures for a while, and the image up top was the final project. I did a lot of messing around with the fonts. At first I was going to paint the words in myself, and I used the wet brush effect found in the brush options to give it a shot, but it just didn't look right. Since the letters are supposedly coming from his finger, it looked kind of gruesome like it was blood (and not that I don't draw the blood and guts, but it wasn't what I was going for in this piece).

Eventually, I settled on using the typeface 'Anything You Want' for the letters instead of writing them myself. Because I'm insane and hate when I see supposedly 'hand-written' fonts that look the same if there's two of the same letter in there, I went in and replaced letters that appeared twice with a different font called 'Grunge'. That's why the Y and R in 'Your' and the first S in 'sucks' look a little different than the rest of the letters...

I went through a ton of different hearts before I decided on the one in the final picture. Once I decided on a final font, it was easier to draw it out because I wanted the heart to look the same as the font. The skull on top was actually a brush I found online (I didn't draw that), but I had to sharpen it to make it look like the rest of the words and heart (that particular batch of brushes I had downloaded look really blurry even at the base resolution, but they're cute anyway). After sharpening the skull, I added some more brushes to fill in some of the scribbles so it matched the aesthetic of the font and heart more.

Initially there was a splash of neon colors coming from behind the boy, but once I was finished with the words and stuff, I thought it didn't look right. So I messed around with mattes a little more and wondered what he would look like if instead of black lines, he had neon rainbow lines. I guess it wouldn't have looked as bad if maybe the lines were a bit darker, because it was hard to pick up some of the details like his facial features. After messing around and adding and taking away from the matte, I decided that colored tattoos looked pretty cool, and I liked the fact that what really sets this guy appart from regular men now stands out a little more. It showed how he's a really colorful guy and the type to leave this message to some girl he's probably crushing on.

So, there you have it! I hope you enjoy it ^___^!

EDIT

So, what started out as a simple correction (I had missed replacing a U in the font) I was looking at the picture and I decided that I didn't like the way the boy was position. So I got rid of his arm and drew a new one. (I turned the picture right-side-up so I could draw the hand right...) I added some finer details that I had missed while drawing him upside-down (some shadows and making lines darker and stuff). I added some ink to his new hand and some handprint paintbrushes that I got online... Finally, I touched up the skull because I realized belatedly that it had that 'Oh, wow, she totally used the sharpen tool on that' look to it.

And here's the (updated) final product!
